COSMETIC TATTOO

FAQs

Cosmetic tattooing is a semi-permanent treatment used  to produce the appearance of hair strokes, makeup, or to enhance the natural features of the face. Cosmetic Tattoo Treatments that we offer at Bystella skin clinic include micro-blading, soft powder shading or ‘ombre’ brows,  Eyeliner and natural lip blush treatments for that perfect pout. All of our equipment is sterilised in a medical grade autoclave or is disposable to prevent any cross contamination during treatments.
If you have had previous cosmetic tattooing from another technician, you MUST inform ByStella before booking your appointment. We may ask you to come in for a seperate consultation prior to your treatment day and possibly request a photo with details of the timing and frequency of your previous treatments. We aim to provide you with the most desirable result, with your best interest at heart – In some cases, this may mean we are unable to treat you until a tattoo removal procedure has taken place.

Thankfully at ByStella we are also experienced in laser tattoo removal services. This is a treatment which may take 1-3 sessions. This allows us to break down the pigment particles so that your body can naturally dispose of them through your lymphatic system. As a result, allowing clients to have a fresh start for either natural brows or a new cosmetic tattoo procedure. Our advanced laser device is designed to treat all areas of the face and body and minimises the risks associated with manual tattoo removal.

A strong topical anaesthetic cream and gel are used for numbing the area during your procedure. It is important to us that your experience is as comfortable and pain free as possible. Everyone’s pain threshold varies and can also be affected by your personal circumstances such as stress level or menstrual cycle. Even a recent cold or flu, which may have stressed your immune system, can impact your procedure. If this is the case small amounts of discomfort are to be expected.

Absolutely not! That is what so wonderful about this procedure. The purpose is to enhance your natural eyebrows. After designing your shape we only clean out the stray hairs that are outside of our desired shape.
We always start any cosmetic tattoo procedure with a thorough consultation. This allows us to assess your natural hair growth/colour, eye colour, skin type, skin health, daily routines and personal preference when determining which technique will be best for you. Even though you might have something in mind, it might not be the best option and we promise to always give you our honest, professional opinion to ensure you leave with the best possible results.
Cosmetic tattoo treatments are considered semi-permanent and will not wash off, however, you will notice the pigment will begin to soften and fade  over time and need to be touched up between 6 – 18 months depending on skin type and care.We can not guarantee the longevity of healed results as each individual is very unique.

Factors that can cause your cosmetic tattoo fade faster:

  • Exposure to salt water and chlorine
  • Iron deficiency

  • Sun exposure

  • Exfoliants & gycolic scrubs

  • Oily skin

  • Smoking

In order to keep your brows looking their best, a touch up or ‘refresh’ appointment is recommended every 8-12 months.  Clients that choose a softer look and lighter shade initially, or those who did not follow the aftercare instructions properly, may require more frequent touch up appointments.

Microblading is eyebrow tattooing, imitating real hair like strokes to create a 3D effect. This procedure is semi-permanent and may last from 9 months to 2 years depending on the skin type and care.
The Ombre’ technique gives a light to dark misting effect. It is a technique that gives you a soft powdered makeup look that is still natural looking. This procedure is semi-permanent and may last up to 1-3 years depending on skin type and care.
A Hybrid Brow is a combination of Ombre’ and Micro-blading. It gives you the hair like strokes along with a nice soft filled in powder brow. This is by far our favourite technique. This procedure may last from 1-3 years depending on the skin type and care.
Microblading, Ombre and Hybrid pigment is not implanted into the skin as deep as traditional cosmetic tattoos, therefore the pigment will fade over time rendering it semi-permanent treatment.

If you have any of the following, Microblading will most likely NOT be the solution for you:

  • Excessive sebum (excessive oily skin), brow strokes can spread creating a more powdery look, thin crisp stokes may not be visible.
  • Big pores
  • Overly sensitive skin
  • Allergies to topical anesthetics
  • Severe Acne on the brow area
  • Keratosis
  • Keloid scarring
  • Facial psoriasis or eczema
  • Overly dry skin
  • Iron deficiency
  • Previous tattoo (previous tattoo done by another artist must have a consultation before booking)
  • Fitzpatrick V & VI in the Fitzpatrick skin type scale. Microblading might not be suitable because of very high risk for scarring and very high risk of hyper/hypo pigmentation after treatment.

If you have any of the following, Ombre will most likely NOT be the solution for you:.

  • Overly sensitive skin
  • Allergies to topical anaesthetics
  • Severe Acne on the eyebrow area
  • Keratosis
  • Keloid scarring
  • Facial psoriasis or eczema
  • Iron deficiency
  • Previous tattoo (previous tattoo done by another artist must have a consultation before booking)

There are also various contraindications that will determine if you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure.

Sun exposure: The sun will extremely soften the look of your tattoo, so a physical sunscreen should be used (once healed) to prolong your enhancement.

The regeneration of skin cells: The longer the regeneration takes, the longer the pigment holds. The speed at which the skin absorbs the pigment: The slower the absorption, the longer the pigment will hold.
The choice of pigment colour: Some colours may fade quicker than others, e.g. a blonde pigment may fade quicker than a dark brunette pigment.
Bleeding during the procedure: Any bleeding during the tattooing procedure will reduce the amount of pigment absorption. Caffeine, alcohol, and certain medications act as blood-thinners and should avoided 48 hours prior to your appointment.
* The colour will lighten over time. We recommend a touch up every 9-24 months to keep brows looking their best. Fading greatly depends on your skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, pigment colour used, broken capillaries, iron deficiency, and if any chemical peels were done after your procedure.

* If you are planning a chemical peel, MRI or other medical procedure, please inform the technician that you have had an iron-oxide cosmetic tattoo. Careful application must be taken to avoid affecting the tattooed area.
* If you are planning to have laser treatments, tell your laser specialist to avoid the pigmented area. Laser may cause pigment to turn black.

No, unfortunately we cannot do your brow procedure if you are pregnant or nursing due to risk of infection.
The eyebrow tattoo does not affect the natural growth of the eyebrow. We definitely encourage you to groom your brows, especially if we are altering your natural shape. If, for example, we raise your tail a bit, allowing the hair to regrow outside the tattoo will make the tails appear thicker. You can still continue to wax, tweeze or thread to groom your brow. We do find that many clients are more comfortable with cleaning their own brows because the shape is always there, or they are able to go longer before their wax appointments because it retains the shape better.

In this time we will go through shaping and decide the best treatment plan for you.  In addition to the photos in your email, please include the date of your last brow tattoo and how many sessions you received.

You can find details instructions on the Pre and Post care section of our website. But here are some important things to know.

  • We strongly advise prospective new clients to book their Cosmetic Tattoo appointments at least 2-4 months in advance of Vacations, Weddings, and Special Occasions. This allows adequate time for healing of both your initial appointment as well as a touch-up Session 5-10 weeks later. It is a multi step process. Some clients need more than two sessions to achieve their desire density and shape.
  • 24 hours prior to your appointment, DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL or
  • 72 hours prior to your appointment, DO NOT TAKE ADVIL or other blood thinners such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Niacin or Vitamin E unless medically necessary.
  • Botox should be done 4 weeks before or 4 weeks after the procedure.
  • Avoid booking during your menstrual cycle as it can increase your pain.
  • No waxing or tinting 4 days
  • Be prepared for your brows to look a little red and really dark! – don’t worry, they will fade in colour 20%-40%
  • YOU MUST NOT BE FRESHLY SUN TANNED OR BURNED ON THE FACE. WE CANNOT PROCEED WITH YOUR SERVICE. A sun tan/burn is injury to the skin, as the skin is healing itself it will shed all the top layers. This means the pigment will not stay. Deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE, please plan accordingly.
  • PLEASE BE READY FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT. We work on a strict schedule and allow 3 hours per appointment. This includes answering questions you may have, mapping brow and procedure. It is important that you trust our cosmetic tattooists and work. Do not book your appointment if you are hesitant, unsure, or apprehensive about changing your natural brows. Book when you are 100% ready for your new brows. We understand everyone is a little bit nervous but this creates a safe space for both you and the artist, allowing us to do our best work in creating your new brows!

Cosmetic Tattooing is a 2 step process, usually scheduled 4-8 weeks apart to allow for adequate healing. It is important to complete both the initial procedure and touch up for optimal results and retention.
STEP 1: The initial procedure takes approximately 2.5-3.5 hours. During this time, a consultation is done where we discuss your desired brow look, choose a colour tone and draw the initial outline of the procedure area for your approval. Though our faces are NOT perfectly symmetrical (one side is usually flatter than the other), we do our very best to create as much symmetry as possible! Once you are satisfied with the basic shape and symmetry, we can then start the procedure. Cosmetic tattooing uses either a manual hand tool or a machine depending on the technique.
STEP 2: The second stage of the process is a TOUCH-UP appointment. The touch up that takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. Touch ups are done no earlier than 4 weeks of your initial procedure and no later than 10 weeks.
It is IMPERATIVE you complete the touch up treatment. Without it, the results will not be optimal. Colour will fade significantly within 4 weeks as the skin heals, peels and fades. The touch up gives your technician a chance to build on or to make any changes or corrections necessary.
**Occasionally a third touch up (4-8 weeks after your touch-up) is necessary for certain clients where the pigment does not take as well to the skin. Although this is rare, if you require a 3rd touch up due to poor aftercare a third touch up will include additional fees. This will be left at the discretion of your cosmetic tattoo artist and advised prior to treatment.**
The area can be a little sore for the first few hours and tender to touch for a couple days. Itchiness is also common the first couple of days however brows look great around 7-10 days from treatment.
As with all cosmetic procedures, individuals should not make their choices lightly. We always recommend clients do their research, understand the procedure and compare different artists’ work and portfolio when making their decisions.  We spend ample time at the consultation to go over brow shapes, colour choices to ensure we pre-draw the best  shape and style the eyebrows to the clients satisfaction prior to the procedure, while staying true to our natural style of cosmetic Tattooing. Every effort will be made to achieve an even appearance, but please realize our faces are never perfectly symmetrical. We do our best to create as much symmetry as possible! Our favourite saying is “BROWS ARE SISTERS, NOT TWINS”.

Minor adjustments to the appearance can be worked on during the touch up session. Pigment discoloration and colour correction can also be addressed during the the touch up session. Cosmetic Tattooed brows will eventually fade if no additional touch ups are done.

Allow the brows to heal before making final judgment on your new brows. Alternatively we also offer cosmetic tattoo removal as an option. Occasionally clients  may need a removal in order to start with a fresh canvas if they have a pre -existing procedure done or are opting for a change to their brow style. Great news is we offer all of these services at ByStella Skin clinic.

Cosmetic Tattooing is a multiple-step appointment process. Healed results will vary with each individual client, and due to the nature of the procedure, NO guarantees will be made.  We do however offer through consultations to ensure we and our clients are happy with the treatment, colour and shape prior to moving forward with the procedure.

Every client’s tattoo retention varies and additional sessions (at an additional charge) may be required to obtain optimal desired results.   Although we give our best efforts to provide you with quality service, many factors can result in a less than desired outcome as each client will heal differently. In order for your new brows to heal properly (and look their very best) following all pre and post care Instructions is crucial! Pre-Care Instructions are designed to limit bleeding and skin sensitivities during the service. Excessive bleeding during the procedure can dilute and expel the pigment colour and lead to poor results. Brows are NOT meant to stay as dark as they initially appear immediately after procedure. Your brows are gradually and continuously getting lighter as your skin is always naturally regenerating and exfoliating itself. Colour boosts are recommended to keep your brows looking their best and are charged according to the work required as a guide these are usually done as a single appointment once a year to maintain best results.

We understand that at times unforeseen circumstances may get in the way of an appointment. However, please understand that a cancelled appointment not only affects you, it also affects the technician and other clients. We have specifically set aside time for you, meaning we also miss an appointment that could have been available for another client.

72 hours notice is required should you need to reschedule your cosmetic tattoo appointment. If you cancel, reschedule or do not attend your appointment, we have the right to retain your deposit. Deposits are non-transferable to another client and only valid for 3 months from the time of your original booking.

If you cancel, reschedule or do not attend your appointment, we have the right to retain your deposit. Another deposit will be required to re-book your treatment.

**Prices can be subject to change**

We are both excited about your appointment and understand that you may be a little bit nervous, however, we do request that your appointment is private. We want the focus to be on you and have found that a second person sitting in on an appointment can be distracting for both the artist and the client. We thank you for your understanding.
