You have 100 skincare products lined up in your bathroom, but do you actually know what order you should be applying them? Did you know if you don’t layer your products in the right way, they basically become ineffective and can also lead to skin irritation, in some cases?
The rule of thumb when it comes to skincare is to apply from lightest to heaviest. So, here’s the order you should be applying your skincare products for optimum results!
STEP 1: CLEANSE + EXFOLIATE
Whether or not you’ve been wearing makeup, cleansing is an essential step that should never be missed! For ingredients to properly absorb into the skin, it needs to be clean and free from any oil and build-up of grime. Be careful not to over-exfoliate, you should only be exfoliating 2 times a week to ensure you’re not stripping away your skins natural oils.

STEP 2: TONE
This is an optional step, but its role is to prime your face for ingredients to be better absorbed. Wait 5 minutes after applying the toner to ensure you’re not neutralising the acids before they get into effect.
STEP 3: SERUM
Serums are formulated to penetrate deeply into the skin to deliver specific, targeted results so you should be using a serum that specifically caters for your skin concern.

STEP 4: EYE CREAM
The thinnest layer of skin is under our eyes and often shows the earliest signs of ageing as it is super delicate which is why this is such an essential step. All you need is a pea-sized amount and use your ring finger to apply.

STEP 5: MOISTURISE
This step is one of the most important as it’s the only product that will keep your skin barrier healthy. Your moisturiser will sit on top of the serum to help lock in additional hydration. Opt for a light-weight cream during the day and a heavy-weight one before bed.

STEP 6: OILS/RETINOLS
An oil should be one of your last steps as they seal in all of the ingredients and moisture you just applied to your face to keep them from evaporating as quickly. This step is especially good for those who have a dry skin type.
Retinol helps to promote skin renewal and enhances collagen production, this product comes in different strengths so you should be using a weak strength retinol and then building up to a stronger one once your skin has adjusted.

STEP 6: ADDITIONAL ADD-ONS
This is where you should apply your additional finishing touches such as SPF, spot treatments or a facial mist!
